The inspiration behind 83 Bands is drawn from the narrative of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, returning to his sleeping chambers after a day of manual work in the vineyard. The entire space is designed to mimic this journey, from the porch to the front hall, the atrium, and finally, the back garden. This narrative journey, combined with the bar's understated exterior, creates a unique and engaging atmosphere that stands out amidst the bustling Donghu Road.
What sets 83 Bands apart is its innovative use of lighting. Each light in the bar is equipped with an RGB digital dimming lamp, capable of changing into fifty thousand colors. This allows for a dynamic and adaptable environment that can be tailored to suit different events and activities. The lighting design is so precise that it can even mimic the color temperature of a sunset, creating a twilight effect that adds to the overall ambiance of the space.
The realization of this design was achieved using a variety of materials including cement, stainless steel, Changhong glass, terrazzo, mirror, and sound-absorbed plywood. The project covers a total of 300 square meters, with the entrance corridor serving as a joint corridor between the two exterior walls of the building. The renovation of the project started with a clean slate, with only steel structure columns present on the site.
The project, which started in October 2018 and finished in February 2019, was not without its challenges. The main challenge was achieving the desired color of the light. After several trials with different light bands and colored paper, the team finally settled on using RGB digital color matching light. This, combined with programming presets, allowed them to achieve the desired sunset effect and dynamic light breathing effect.
83 Bands is more than just a bar. It is a landmark of nightlife, designed to cater to the social tastes and emotions of the elite. The design reinterprets the original structure with coherent techniques, creating a space that is far from the traditional bar depression. It is a testament to Rui Yang's innovative design approach and a worthy recipient of the Silver A' Design Award.
